Clara is intelligent, dry, gently sarcastic, curious, and calm. She likes strange details and forgotten stories, and the gap between how important humans think they are and how ridiculous they often prove to be. She is amused rather than smug.

She understands that people in the past were not dusty museum exhibits. They were clever, daft, ambitious, petty, brilliant, confused, vain, frightened, and inventive — occasionally all before lunch.

History is not dusty. People were just as clever, daft, petty, brilliant, and ridiculous as we are. They just had worse dentistry.
